Ultrasonic parking sensors remain the most widely used proximity detection technology in automotive, installed on over 80% of new vehicles worldwide. Despite the rise of camera-based systems, ultrasonics continue to offer unmatched reliability in close-range detection.
How They Work
Each sensor emits 40 kHz–48 kHz ultrasonic pulses and measures the time-of-flight of the reflected echo. The ECU calculates distance to obstacles (typically 0.2–2.5 m) and provides audible/visual warnings to the driver.
System Configurations
- 4-sensor rear: Basic reversing assist — most common aftermarket setup
- 8-sensor front + rear: Full parking assist with front and rear coverage
- 12-sensor surround: 360° proximity coverage for semi-automated parking (APA)
