Navigating the Automotive Electronics Supply Chain in 2025

Chip shortages may have eased, but new challenges have emerged. Here's how to build a resilient sourcing strategy.

The chip shortage of 2021–2023 exposed critical vulnerabilities in automotive supply chains. While lead times have normalized for most components, the industry now faces new challenges: geopolitical tensions, rare-earth material constraints, and evolving regional content requirements.

Dual-Sourcing Strategy

The days of relying on a single fab or single region are over. Leading OEMs now mandate dual-sourcing for every critical component — ideally from suppliers in different geopolitical zones. This adds cost but dramatically reduces the risk of line stoppages.

Regionalization

The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) both incentivize local content. Expect more automotive electronics production to shift toward Europe, North America, and India to meet these requirements.
