OEM Android Head Units: What to Look For

With dozens of Android auto head units on the market, we break down the specs that really matter for vehicle integration.

Android-based head units have become the dominant platform for aftermarket and factory-installed infotainment systems. But not all units are created equal — selecting one for OEM integration requires careful evaluation of hardware, software, and long-term support.

Hardware Considerations

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 6-series or higher for smooth multitasking
  • RAM / Storage: Minimum 4 GB RAM, 64 GB eMMC for app storage
  • Display: IPS or AMOLED, 1280×720 or higher, with capacitive multi-touch
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 5/6, Bluetooth 5.x, 4G LTE optional
  • Audio output: DSP-integrated with 4×50 W amplifier

Software & Integration

Look for units running Android Automotive OS (not regular Android) for native CarPlay/Android Auto support, CAN bus integration, and OTA update capability. The OS should support vehicle-specific protocols for steering wheel controls, climate display, and reverse camera trigger.
